What is Purple Thursday?

AtFirst Player we don’t follow the trend set by others.

We enjoy being different.

We allow our Community to drive our decisions.

We listen and seek out feedback from our Players.

Purple Thursday is one of two weeks of the year where we give back in the form of a Sale.

Before we get into the details of Purple Thursday this year, we wanted to let you know how important you are to us.

We wouldn’t be here without you. Truly. Jocelyn and Steve started First Player with our personal collection of cards, a dream for a gaming store where everyone is treated fairly, and an experience where the Players can let go of our lives outside of an evening of fun and games. A second home where you can unplug and turn cardboard sideways.

We are continuously amazed at the level of support this Community has provided. We have grown faster than we imagined possible. Yet, we have ambitious plans. We are ready to take the leap to the next level. But we need your help.

As we approach the City of Calgary’s vote on the rezoning of Shedpoint (the home of First Player), we are on the verge of becoming a fully realised retail store. This is huge. This is the first step towards that next level.

We are looking for some next level investment to help get us there. So please know, that every time you make a purchase online or in our Showroom, every time you drive to pick up an order, or join us for a night of games – you are investing in us. You are the ones fueling this growth.

You are the ones who allow us the build an amazing team and so we can continue to be the Heart of your Gaming Community.

The Road Ahead - July 2024 Update

Good Day Players, we hope you are finding ways to enjoy or escape the heat of summer!

First Player has been busier than ever before, with lots of very exciting change.

EXPANSION

On May 1st of this year, we moved our Showroom and Warehouse (also known as The Sanctum) to a new location within Shedpoint. We doubled the size of our space. This has allowed us to continue to grow, carry a wider selection of games, and accept more trade-ins.

This expansion has been a bit of a double-edged sword, as now we have needed to grow our team to handle all of this expansion.

MADDIE

If you have not had the pleasure of dealing with her yet, please welcome Maddie to our team. Maddie comes with an expertise in Pokemon and a desire to develop our Disney Lorcana offerings. She is a wonderful human being and an incredible ball of energy and you will find her in our Showroom most days. Should you stop in and say hi, be prepared to share who your favourite Pokemon is!

ORDER WAIT TIMES

We have increased our Order Wait Time as we are working with a bigger influx of Orders on a weekly basis. We are steam lining many of our processes to handle the increased workload, and also working on some larger, long-term solutions to ensure Orders are produced and get into the hands of our customers in a timely fashion. Our current estimated wait time is 5-7 days, although we expect to reduce this significantly in the weeks ahead. We thank you for your patience at this time.

FIRST PLAYER INVITATIONAL - CANADIAN HIGHLANDER

Canadian Highlander showcases some of the best Magic Players using the most powerful cards in the history of the game.

This SUNDAY, JULY 28TH we will be hosting our first Invitational with the Grand Prize of a 3rd Edition/Revised Savannah (est $375).

Players are welcome to use up to 10 Proxy cards in their decks for the Invitational Tournament.

Come down for 2pm and watch some phenomenal game play with us!

BLOOMBURROW RELEASE WEEKEND

We are going to have a very exciting event on SATURDAY AUGUST 3rd for the release of Magic the Gathering's Bloomburrow. The Event is call Pre-Con-Vergence, where Commander players can expect a ton of fun and prizes for playing with Pre-Con Commander decks.

Joining us for the event are:

Nice Dice - our Alberta-local custom dice maker,

Phoenix Blue - our Shedpoint-local 3D Printing expert who will be showing off their 3D Printed Gaming Accessories and

Nerdhome Community - our Calgary-Local Streamers, Podcasters and staple of the Commander Community here in Calgary.

Look for their booths in the Event Centre on August 3rd at 6pm.

Finally, we are having a Bake Sale - all of the goodies and refreshments you can handle, with all of the proceeds going to Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society - AARCS.

BANDAI, ONE PIECE AND UNION ARENA

On July 1st we had the privilege of receiving a Level Up from Bandai from a Bronze to Silver Ranked Store.

This allows up to host 32 player events, gives us greater access to products for One Piece and the Upcoming Union Arena.

We will also be hosting many higher profile events for One Piece as well. Look for our Treasure Cup Tournament in August. Treasure Cup Tournaments feature some of the fanciest prizes available in the One Piece scene.

Union Arena, a new game from Bandai which features cards and decks based upon a different Anime with each release, will be launching this fall. Keep an eye out for our release events for Hunter x Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach and more in the coming weeks!

SORTING

We have one more "employee" lending a hand ... er ... conveyor these days. Please welcome "Skynet" to the First Player team. While we may have named it after the one of our favourite Sci-fi sentience, The Phyzbatch 9000 from TCG Machines is a truly incredible machine. This card sorting machine is a game changer for anyone working in the Retail Gaming space, doing the heavy lifting of sorting your bulk cards with ease, in record time.

Currently this machine is for internal use only, but we expect it will not be long before we are offering the service of sorting your card collections to our Community.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

After launching Dungeons and Dragons Play over the past few weeks, we are excited to announce we are going adding D&D into our Weekly Events!

Join us every Sunday at 3pm for some wild and fun campaigns with GM James.

Be sure to book your seat early, at seating is limited for each session.
